Visiting Nepal: a delightful food find in a downpour on the streets of Kathmandu

The rain fell in soaking sheets as we tried to find our way through the mucky streets of back-alley Thamel, the bustling, buzzing tourist area of Kathmandu.

We were disagreeing on whether we were lost (She: “Without a doubt.” He: “I know exactly where we are.”)

Delicious food at Frens Kitchen in Kathmandu, Nepal

It was one of those moments when you travel that is misery and stress in the instant, but later stands out as a defining experience.

And in this case the defining experience emerged as we chanced upon a little restaurant, Frens Kitchen, its neat courtyard set back from an alley. Covered dining areas were the obvious attraction as we dodged the raindrops to find a table.

Then what began as a simple escape from the raid became a delightful dinner. The momos were perfectly prepared, and if you have not tried these tasty little dumplings they are a must. The dal bhat was delicious, filling and authentically spiced. The menu is quite eclectic, as you expect in a touristy spot, with Nepalese, Indian, and Continental cuisine on offer.

As the rain abated and we relaxed with beers, our GPS apps showed us that we were only a couple blocks from our hotel after all.

As you travel through Nepal and visit Kathmandu, consider putting Frens on your list for a relaxing meal, especially if you are lost in the rain.
