We are certain we will never see anything more incredible than the Northern Lights. We’re 200 miles above the Arctic Circle in Norway, near a little town called Tromsø.
The night was very overcast and rainy. We were certain we would not be seeing anything more than the glare of the city lights off the low cloud cover.
Our driver Andrea picked us up at our hotel and he was upbeat and optimistic that maybe we would see the lights. We drove on a windy course out of town, north across the fjord.

About 45 minutes in, as we reached darker areas among the mountains, Andrea suddenly leaned and pointed off to the sky to our right. “Here it comes,” he said.
I couldn’t see anything but clouds.
But Andrea pulled us off on a side road and urged us out of the car. And within minutes, the clouds had parted and we were treated to an unbelievable show for the next half hour.
It’s an important point to remember if you travel to Norway and hope to see the aurora borealis. You never know where, when and how long they’ll appear.
Well, we got very lucky to get them all … and it was spectacular. It was spiritual. One of those moments that truly takes your breath away.
